SevgiyleLeventHi All,I thought I'd write a few words about the Zombies show that we did last week on Acik Radyo here in Istanbul. My friends Hakan (a neurologist), Levent (who's in advertising), andRuhi (a spiritual mechanical engineer) do a show every Tuesday night, where they discuss eclectic music groups. (Acik Radyo is well-known for precisely these kinds of offerings... every city really ought to have a beautiful little station like this.)It was very interesting and a lot of fun. The guys had done theirhomework, and they all had heard the Zoms' three hits in one form or another (for example, Santana's version of She's Not There), as well as the Argent and Alan Parsons stuff. I think that Hakan even listened to the entire Zombieheaven box set a couple of times before the show.Well, when you walk into the studio, the first thing they do is to hand you a cold beer, and then it's just four pals sitting around talking about the music. Here's the play list:She's Not ThereThis Will Be Our Year (which sounded very nice after the cold ending toSNT)
Whenever You're Ready (an example of a hit that should've been)Care of Cell 44Hold Your head Up (for those Argent fans)The Look of Love (from the BBC)Tell Her NoMisty Roses (from One Year)Time of the SeasonWe only had time for those nine songs, since there was so muchdiscussion, alternating between English (lucky for me) and Turkish. The guys had a good time comparing the sound of the songs to other artists they knew... for instance, Nick Drake's name came up a couple of times. And they liked the usual stories about the group's unique career. They were also interested in the musical structure of the songs (something that they were better equipped at discussing than me), where the Zoms fit in with respect to the 60's music scene, and what the Zoms are doing now. The suggestion was even made that the Zoms might visit Istanbul sometime (a good friend of the show is the fellow who runs the Istanbul Jazz Festival each year, so who knows?).It turns out that a bunch of people heard the show. My neighbor (who didn't know I was gonna be on the air) accused me of causing him to have a traffic accident when he heard the show while driving home. Even a couple of my students listened in, so maybe now they think that I'm a little less geeky than all outside appearances would otherwise suggest. I *think* the show was taped... looking into that now. (I know that Koen got the last 15 minutes.)dave
