Hubert Reeves and David Suzuki sound warning call on climate change - 3,400 expected to attend climate change event at the Palais des Congrès de Montréal
Tonight, two of Canada's most prominent environmentalists, Mr. Hubert Reeves and Mr. David Suzuki, will appear together for the first time at the Palais des Congrès de Montréal to discuss climate change. Over 3,400 people are expected to attend the sold-out event. This event promises to be one of the largest public environmental conferencesever to take place in North America, and will be a precursor to the UnitedNations conference on climate change scheduled for Montreal next month. Bothspeakers will discuss their concerns about climate change and encourage thepublic and government to take action. According to Mr. Reeves, "since the Rio Summit (1992), the reduction ofgreenhouse gas emissions appears as a necessity to reduce global warming. We must decide now if we want to live tomorrow". Quoting André Malraux,Mr. Reeves declared: "the 21st century will be green, or will not be at all!" "This is the time for Canada to put our plans into action and show therest of the world that we're serious about climate change," said Dr. Suzuki,Chair of the David Suzuki Foundation. "It's up to the federal government andthe provinces to prove that we are ready to embrace this opportunity." Organized by Equiterre, tonight's event will inspire the Quebecgovernment to quickly devise a plan to combat climate change. "The Quebecgovernment, which claims to be respectful of the National Assembly'scommitment to do its part in a greenhouse gas reduction plan must proceedwithout further delay to adopt and the implement a vigorous Quebec action plan on climate change," said Sydney Ribaux, co-founder and general coordinator of Equiterre. "We believe that a goal of 6% under the 1990 greenhouse gas emission levels is a feasible objective for Quebec for the period ranging from 2008 and 2012," added Mr. Ribaux. Equiterre is a non-profit organization whose goal is to contribute tobuilding a citizen movement by promoting both environmental and sociallyresponsible collective and individual choices. The Vancouver-based David Suzuki Foundation is a registered non-profitthat works through science and education to protect the diversity of natureand our quality of life, now and for the future.
